The Best of Times– at Least for a Murder

In 1729, Jonathan Swift wrote “A Modest Proposal” in which he suggested that the poor Irish should sell their children as food, arguing in detail that “the advantages by the proposal which I have made are obvious and many.” It’s probably the most brilliant satire ever—Swift figuratively flays the English oppressors of Ireland even as he proposes literally to flay the oppressed.
